Taxi operators object to riots, protect communities amidst anarchy

JOHANNESBURG – Amid the chaos unfolding in South Africa’s Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, some organisations who have strong ties with the community have taken a stand against the anarchy.

One such organisation is South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), which has voiced their objection to the ongoing riots and have chosen rather to protect the community.

Salaamedia’s Julie Allie talks to SANTACO President, Phillip Taaibosch about the positive input that the taxi industry have towards the ongoing unrest in the country.

“SANTACO has indicated on many occasions that it is a business organization [and] not a political organisation in anyway. It is a service to people who don’t have the means to get to point B from home and that is what SANTACO will continue doing,” Taaibosch said.

For years, the taxi industry has provided essential travelling services in South Africa. Thus, it will not be involved in what has not been organized by the industry and have chosen rather to distance themselves from the unrest in the country.

With pride, Taaibosch said: “I am pleased as the president of SANTACO that members of the taxi industry have taken a stand for peace in KZN, Eastern Cape and everywhere else and to protect their property.”

He added that if a member of SANTACO is found to be loading stolen goods, they will be dealt with lawfully.
