People are conditioned in all aspects of life, their jobs, families and social environments. As such, they are vulnerable to many external factors and influences which might positively or negatively affect their mental state and behaviour.
Junaid Bayat, an internationally accredited motivational speaker and life coach, created a framework called FOCUS to promote mental optimism and positivity in adults and children.
When asked how he stays motivated, Bayat said he broke free from societal influence. He reprogrammed and reconditioned his mindset to be in constant excitement and buoyancy.

Two Types of Motivation
In his experience, there are two types of motivation. The first is extrinsic motivation, and the second is intrinsic.
Extrinsic motivation consists of an external reward, while intrinsic motivation is the act of self-validation, internal growth and progression without the promise of an incentive. The latter, according to Bayat, is the most significant.
“Most people in the world right now are more focused on extrinsic motivation, which is external things, material objects [and resources] … We’ve got to have internal motivation. That’s who I am. It [defines me], it excites me [and] it energises those around me. We’ve got to focus more on intrinsic motivation, and that is the motivation that is lacking, whether it’s little kids or adults. Everybody is always looking into something external. Simply put, we need to break out of our conditioning, and we’ve got to have a lot of self-motivation.”
How to Overcome Negative Thoughts
There is no doubt that people struggle with mental health issues and lethargy. However, some are stuck in a constant state of negativity in their everyday lives. This negativity is perceived in their speech, behaviour and action. Bayat said such individuals are constantly living and feeding into their victim mindset.
Bayat defines the characteristics of such individuals as the lack of accountability for their actions, always making excuses when doing day-to-day tasks and constantly having doubt in their abilities.
To break free from such conditioning, Bayat suggested, people need to control themselves, their thoughts and their actions.
They need to learn to empower themselves by setting goals and having long-term visions for their lives, being proactive and not letting external and internal influences dictate the outcome of their futures.
“People that are empowered are always in control of their power. Others can do whatever they want, and people can say whatever they want to them [and] they say you can stand on my head and whistle, it doesn’t change how I feel. I am in control of my feelings. The biggest thing about empowered people is that they take full responsibility and they are accountable for everything. There’s no blaming, there’s no complaining, and there’s no making excuses.”
Bayat continues to state the human mind processes thousands of thoughts daily. If those thoughts are constantly negative, the individual will begin to adopt a reactionary response to challenges they may face in every aspect of their lives.
However, suppose individuals adopt a positive and progressive mental framework. In that case, it will drastically improve their behaviour towards challenges they may encounter. This development begins when individuals take control of their lives, which will benefit them in their careers, social lives and future goals.
