In contrast to other countries, South Africa does not have a designated waiting period for reporting a missing person. As a result, individuals must promptly notify the missing person to the South African Police Services or related organisations that cooperate with law enforcement.
In fact, Bianca van Aswegen, the National Coordinator of Missing Children SA, emphasised the importance of reporting a missing person when there are slight concerns about the person’s safety and well-being. Her advice aligns with the recognition of National Child Protection Week. This annual observance aims to increase awareness about children’s rights in South Africa.
The government encourages all South Africans to support this initiative so the most vulnerable are kept safe and away from harm. “It is in our hands to stop the cycle of neglect, abuse, violence and exploitation of children.”
“Children in South Africa live in a society with a constitution that has the highest regard for their rights and for the equality and dignity of everyone. Protecting children from violence, exploitation, and abuse is not only a basic value but also an obligation.”
The Safety of Children is a Global Concern
In South Africa and numerous countries globally, there are significant issues regarding kidnapping, trafficking, and abuse. Various motives drive these crimes, including sexual exploitation, child labour, illegal adoption, and illicit organ trafficking.
Unfortunately, the situation concerning missing individuals in South Africa remains distressing as the number of people affected grows.
Van Aswegen said, “Stats only give us a general indication of the problem we are facing. There are many cases that go unreported due to people living in rural areas, or they are too scared to go to the police station.”
She also emphasised the importance of directing significant attention towards missing children and adults this week, which is undoubtedly justified. However, considering the alarming increase in child and adult abduction cases, it is crucial to maintain consistent efforts and emphasise raising awareness and educating the public on precautions to keep themselves and their families safe.

Take Safety Precautions
The occurrence of kidnapping is not limited to any particular region. It can happen to individuals regardless of their location. Frequently, people are abducted in public places.
According to van Aswegen, specific individuals are enticed into dangerous situations through social and digital media platforms. These enticements can take the form of job prospects or romantic engagements.
As a result, the criminologist urged parents, caregivers, and children to exercise responsibility when in public spaces. They need to remain vigilant of their surroundings, whether walking to and from school or visiting shopping centres and other public areas.
“This is something that is happening around South Africa, no matter what area you are in. We need to keep our children safe, and that’s the important thing. Especially parents and caregivers, know where your children are at all times.”
