Ahmed Munzoor Shaik Emam, the leader of The National Freedom Party (NFP), stated that the government had assured him that Palestinians would soon be allowed to enter South Africa without needing a visa. Previously, Palestinian diplomats and civilians faced difficulties gaining access to the country.
Concerns about this matter have been raised by his party, along with organisations and supporters showing solidarity with the Palestinians. Shaik Emam praises the resolute determination of South Africans to address this issue and ensure it remains at the forefront. After thorough deliberation, he was pleased that their continued efforts had produced a favourable outcome.
Earlier this year, the South African Parliament passed a draft resolution initiated by the NFP and supported by various political parties, including the ANC. This resolution resulted in the downgrading of the South African embassy in Israel.
Criticism of the SA Government Over Visas
The South African government has faced criticism from Palestinian supporters for maintaining apartheid-era policies that allow unrestricted entry for Israeli citizens into the country.
The persistence of these policies during the democratic era has given rise to the perception that Israeli occupiers are being favoured over the Palestinians, even though it is not so. However, if implemented, this motion, of Palestinians not requiring visas, is expected to dismiss any doubts regarding South Africa’s position on the Palestinian cause.
“The government and the minister have said that on the issue of Palestinian diplomats, the matter is receiving urgent attention. It has been finalised. But very importantly for all ordinary Palestinians, [the minister] has given an assurance that by no later than the end of June, he will have dealt with that matter. So ordinary Palestinians will be able to enjoy the same benefits as their counterparts in Israel for visa-free entry into South Africa.”

SA a Home for Palestinians
Shaik Emam doubts the possibility of a significant influx of Palestinians into the country if the South African government lifted certain entry restrictions. Considering the severe atrocities they are facing at an unprecedented level, he believes they should be granted asylum.
While visas facilitate entry into the country for work, education, or visitation purposes, Sheik Emam emphasises that the core issue is ensuring that Palestinians receive the same rights and privileges in South Africa as other nations do.
“Right now, what is important is to ensure that Palestinians who want to come and visit South Africa are allowed to come in here without intimidation, harassment and stringent visa conditions. I think that is the important thing of what we [wanted] to achieve, and we have got to that point.”
