Western Cape – The Western Cape is currently under severe weather conditions, with flooding significantly affecting numerous communities. The unprecedented rainfall has led to extensive devastation, particularly in areas prone to flooding and waterlogging.

Naweed Mohamed, the Development Team Lead for Islamic Relief South Africa (IRSA), reported that the severe weather has caused widespread destruction, especially in informal settlements. It has impacted approximately 30,000 residences in informal and suburban areas, affecting a staggering 50,000 people.

“Heavy torrential rains, gale-force winds, and floods have damaged several regions across the Western Cape. So most of the affected areas that we’re seeing are the informal settlements, with thousands of homes damaged. The latest numbers we’ve got is close to 30,000 dwellings in both informal settlements and suburbs that have been affected.”

“There are over 70 neighbourhoods that have experienced flooding, and at least 50,000 people have been affected, with countless more displaced and homeless. So, the situation remains critical and is increasing by the hour. The flood-affected families are in dire need of assistance.”

IRSA has been actively coordinating with Cape Town’s Disaster Management Teams and other relief organisations. The primary focus has been delivering immediate relief to those affected, including food, water, blankets, and sandbags. Beyond this initial aid, efforts are also directed toward the next phase, rebuilding the destroyed homes.

“The need for homes is great. I think the only sustainable solution is if the government can ramp up the supply of brick-and-mortar homes, then we can try and at least minimise this.”

Urgent Call for South Africans to Assist Relief Organisations

Despite the ongoing relief efforts, the need for individual, community, and donor support remains immense. On behalf of IRSA, Naweed calls on the public to contribute their time, money, and efforts to local emergency response initiatives.

Donations of food, water, clothing, blankets, and other essential items are crucial for ongoing relief operations. These contributions help ensure the basic needs of affected families are met and support them in starting to rebuild their lives after the floods.

“We really must say that our South African community really supports our global initiatives, and we’re calling once again on our South African community to support our local efforts and to ensure that we can take care of as many people as possible.”

“If you are not able to donate money or you don’t have any items to donate to us if you’re available, maybe come and assist us. It’s all hands on deck at the moment. But if you have any items you would like to drop off, they can drop them off at our offices.”
