Hajj Diaries: A Pilgrim’s Reflection on Faith, Family, and Hajj

Saudi Arabia – The sacred journey of Hajj is not only special and transformative — it also demands sacrifice. It is a test of faith, patience, and surrender, often accompanied by profound emotional weight.

For South African pilgrim Nazeera Aboo Baker, this year’s pilgrimage has brought both spiritual fulfilment and profound personal loss. Just hours after arriving in Saudi Arabia for her first Hajj, Nazeera received devastating news: her father had passed away back home in South Africa.

Despite her grief, she decided to continue with the pilgrimage, carrying her father’s memory with her through every moment of worship.

“He was the softest and the most gentle person in the world, the kindest man that we ever came across. And he would never say a word to anyone or anything despite suffering,” she said.

The Hajj Experience

Like many first-time pilgrims to Makkah, Nazeera described her experience as both humbling and uplifting. The preparation was intense, from organising documents and securing visas to attending Hajj classes and reading through guidebooks shared by friends and family.

But no amount of planning could compare to the moment she first saw the Kaaba, “It was mesmerising,” she said,

“It was just, just too beautiful. You look at the Kaaba, and you don’t believe that you are standing in front of the Kaaba yourself. You see the Kaaba … You see it on TV, you watch the namaz going on and… and whatever. And here you are, standing in front of the Kaaba yourself. Unbelievable.”

Though the pain of loss remains, Nazeera has found strength in prayer and the shared unity of the pilgrims around her. She said the journey has been spiritually nourishing.

She looks ahead with hope to the sacred days of Mina, Muzdalifah, and especially Arafah — moments where she intends to make heartfelt supplications and remember her father in every prayer.

To those still awaiting their opportunity to perform Hajj, Nazeera shared a powerful reminder about the importance of divine timing. She urged others not to lose hope, stressing that every believer’s path unfolds with purpose and wisdom.

“Believe in the power of Allah. He has got a plan for you. Nothing can change it. Just keep praying and ask Allah. Only have faith and trust in Him. You will not be disappointed.”

“It may not happen now, but He knows when the time is right. There are tests and challenges that we face, but the faith and the trust in Allah gets us through it,” Nazeera said.
