Local – Palestine Information Network’s Moulana Ebrahim Moosa has condemned the recent visit by a delegation of American Muslim leaders to Israel, calling it a betrayal of the Palestinian cause and a display of hypocrisy during an ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
Moosa said the visit came at a time when global outrage against Israel’s military actions was reaching unprecedented levels.
He emphasised that across Europe and the United States, ordinary citizens had been demanding accountability and justice for the Palestinian people.
“This is coming after a genocide. Protest movements in Spain forced the hand of their government. Protest movements in Italy forced the hands of their government. The pro-genocide stance of Joe Biden was what led to his downfall in the United States of America.”
He explained that the timing of the visit suggested desperation from pro-Israel lobbyists seeking to manipulate global narratives.
Moosa argued that the trip served as a propaganda tool designed to project false unity between Israel and Muslim communities while downplaying the atrocities in Gaza.
“We could just look at this as the last kicks of a dying horse from the Israeli side—getting anybody who’s willing to sell themselves for the cheapest dollar to speak the talking points that they want at a particular time.”
Questioning Credibility and Motives
Moosa criticised the individuals involved, questioning whether they held any real standing within their communities.
He said such delegations were often presented as influential religious figures, when in reality they represented no genuine leadership or scholarly authority.
“Many of them were, on further investigation, held no weight within their communities whatsoever. But regardless, the kind of media furore that this throws up makes it necessary for us to engage with this so that it does not become more mainstream.”
He added that the visit fit into a wider regional strategy involving powerful Gulf states normalising ties with Israel under the guise of interfaith cooperation.
Moosa said these initiatives were part of a coordinated effort to rehabilitate Israel’s image amid international condemnation.
“You have the promotion of the Abraham Accords and normalisation under a kind of lovey-dovey banner of faith coming out of the United Arab Emirates, and then you have imams or leaders embarking on these trips at such a sensitive time when the moment is ripe to complete the isolation of Israel.”
Upholding Scholarly Integrity
Moosa warned that such actions threatened the moral authority and credibility of Islamic scholarship worldwide. He said scholars bore the responsibility to stand firmly with the oppressed and to reject any form of complicity with aggressors.
“The integrity of the scholarly tradition demands unambiguous solidarity with the oppressed and uncompromising rejection of any form of complicity with the aggressor.”
Educating Future Scholars Against Exploitation
He stressed that the incident should serve as a wake-up call for Muslim institutions to re-examine how they educate future scholars. Moosa said ignorance about political realities allowed opportunists to exploit religion for personal or political gain.
“It’s important for our seminaries to provide basic media training and develop in our graduates a solid understanding of the history of Zionism and the contemporary geopolitics of the Muslim world,” he said.
“Shutting politics out from our discourse will only result in people taking very anti-Ummah stances that cause humiliation for us on a global scale.”
