1-7 April 2019 marks Africa’s 15th annual Israeli Apartheid Week, a week in which awareness is raised about the conditions in Palestine, focusing on Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories.
In an interview with Salaamedia’s AzharVadi, Badee Dwaik; a resident of Hebron, a published poet and author, and a practitioner of non-violent resistance; explained his position in the struggle and the importance of raising awareness around the issues faced in occupied Palestine.
Detained 17 times “just because [he] is a Palestinian,” Dwaik told Salaamedia listeners that he was first arrested for fighting against Israeli occupation in the first intifada when he was only 19. Yet he was determined to continue this method of passive resistance until freedom of the Palestinians has been achieved.
While some in the occupied territories choose the route of armed resistance, Dwaik has opted for non-violent resistance in the face of a violent occupation. He explained that through photography, injustices against Palestinians can be exposed in an impartial manner. Dwaik said that by posting objective photographs on social media, an unedited, unhindered views of the Palestinian struggle would be offered to the world.
The Palestinians are not just fighting against Israel, but against a multitude of powerful countries, all of whom staunchly support the state of Israel. Countries such as America, the U.K. and Germany all contribute generously towards Israel’s military and regime. Support of Israel by external forces complicates the Palestinian struggle greatly.
During his time in South Africa, Dwaik hoped to meet with various influential political figures and explain to them the concept of Palestinian resistance. Many parallels can be drawn between African, particularly South African struggles in the apartheid era, and the struggles faced by the Palestinians today.
