Long hours of the same work can become tedious and lead to burnout. That’s bad for productivity – both at a professional and a personal level. Professionally one’s focus, output and engagement are reduced and personally, one’s motivation, attention span and problem-solving ability is compromised.

So how does one maintain productivity after doing the same work for a long time? Salaamedia’s Maryam Mkwanda spoke to life and corporate coach Gaile Wilson to find out how.

“Companies throughout the world – your Fortune 500 companies and all of those – have come to see that happiness and productivity are directly related,” said Wilson as she explained the importance of leading a happy lifestyle to boost productivity.

Here are some of the tips shared by Wilson:

A method to beat procrastination

Wilson explained that it is impossible to live in a continual space of happiness and only do tasks that make one happy.  “The procrastination, the boringness and the lack of motivation tend to creep in – especially when you’ve been doing something for a while.”

She suggests implementing renowned author and motivational speaker Mel Robbins’ ‘5 Second Rule’ to beat procrastination, where one makes sure to get down to a task within five seconds, before the brain loses motivation and decides not to act upon the task at hand.

Ask for help

“A lot of low productivity comes from individuals who actually are not able to do the job up to standard,” said Wilson.

That’s why, she says, it’s important to build the courage to ask for assistance that may even come in the form of additional training. “Most times when we ask for help, we will be helped.”

Write down your top 5 values

“So, let’s say my values, just to give you two, are excellence and adding value to others’ lives,” said Wilson. She explained that it may be helpful to write down your values so that they may be a source of motivation for you.

These are just three shared by Gaile Wilson, a life and corporate coach, you can find mtipsore in the full interview with Maryam Mkwanda:
