South Africa – In a shocking revelation, it has come to light that an Eskom executive, who possesses top-level security clearance, is now a person of interest in an investigation by the South African Police Service. The executive stands accused of participating in targeted sabotage at power stations, alongside a network of accomplices, all driven by personal gain. These distressing findings validate long-held suspicions and media reports regarding the rampant sabotage occurring within Eskom.

Power stations have been plagued by numerous acts of sabotage over the years. Reports of problems within Eskom and its power stations have been reported since 2016. The crisis that engulfed Eskom is because of the various ways the power stations have been sabotaged over the years, explained Trevor Shaku, Spokesperson for South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU).

“What we have seen is a lot of acts of sabotage including the change of people, swapping high grade coal which is meant to go to Eskom power stations for lower grade. People who would swap coal with rocks. Last year around November they reported that a truck loaded with rocks went into an Eskom power station. People who, within Eskom itself and I suspect part of some of these syndicates which have been exposed, were cutting pipes supplying necessary oils to some of the units in the power stations but also just shear stealing diesel.”

These criminal activities are being perpetrated by crime syndicates who are ensuring they profit from the ongoing crisis, said Shaku.

The investigation is welcomed by all

The SAFTU welcomes the investigation into the alleged sabotage activities. It is encouraging to know that both the security cluster and the SAPS have this information and are working towards arresting the culprits. What is particularly concerning, however, is that the executive in question appears to have recruited several individuals, including engineers, artisans, and even forensic audit workers, to assist in these criminal activities.

“Even more worrying is those who are contracted to do forensic auditing. It seems that the conversation published by the City Press shows a communication between the co-conspirator, who is a forensic audit worker, and this Eskom executive. It means that the thing is rotten to the core. Both those contracted and those within Eskom are in cahoots to try and milk that entity by creating sabotages, a crisis which is not even there so that they can be able to profit out of it.”

Naming and shaming those sabotaging Eskom

While it is important to follow due process and uphold the principle of “innocent until proven guilty” in a court of law, it is crucial to publicly identify and shame those responsible for these acts of sabotage. By doing so, not only does it expose their actions but also send a strong message to other potential criminals involved in similar activities.

“The main thing is that as soon as the arrest is done, they should come forward with the name of this [Eskom executive] and all other individuals who are linked to him … I do not believe that this will be the only network that is criminally operating to sabotage Eskom power stations. There might be a number of webs which are operating there and as a result you are going to have to strike fear into the hearts of those other criminals by ensuring that you name them. Also begin a process not just of naming and shaming but begin a process of ensuring that these people account through our law enforcement system.”

Eskom’s response to the allegations

In response to the allegations, Eskom says it remains committed to rooting out fraud and corruption within the utility. The power utility released a statement on Tuesday declaring its commitment to rooting out corruption within its four walls.

“Eskom takes these sabotage allegations seriously and will allow the law to take its course. Eskom is committed to rooting out fraud, corruption and sabotage within its ranks and will fully cooperate with law enforcement to ensure the most effective and coordinated responses to any crime related to Eskom’s operations.”

The revelation of sabotage at Eskom and the involvement of a high-ranking executive highlights the deep-rooted corruption and collusion within the power utility. Only by holding these individuals accountable, successful convictions and recovering the lost funds can the damage caused by these individuals be rectified. Implementing stringent measures to prevent future sabotage is essential to safeguard South Africa’s future. Addressing this issue promptly, with the determination to root out corruption and ensure the stability of the energy sector, will be pivotal in securing a brighter future for the nation and its people.

In an interview with Julie Alli, Trevor Shaku, delved into the intricate web of corruption and sabotage engulfing Eskom and shone a light on the ANC’s role and responsibility in the crisis while emphasising the urgent need for justice and restitution, and explores the profound impact these acts of sabotage have had on the nation.
