Western Cape – The passing of culinary legend Fatima Sydow has left South Africans in collective mourning. Fatima, who battled soft tissue sarcoma since 2020, was not only celebrated for her culinary expertise and dedication to preserving South African Malay flavours but also cherished for her warm, kind, and vibrant personality, which endeared her to the nation.
In an emotional tribute, Fatima’s longtime friend, Madeegha Peterson Andors, expressed the profound loss, emphasising the memories of Fatima’s infectious smile, indomitable spirit, and remarkable ability to find light in the darkest moments.
“What I’m going to miss about her, even through her illness, she tried to make you not feel uncomfortable, like I’m going to be fine, that was her words, I’m going to be okay. To a point where I said, I believe in miracles, and I know that [God] is going to bring you through this … I really believed that right until the end, she was going to make it, but [God] knows best, and I accept it.”

Fatima’s Kindness and Loving Spirit Lives On
Beyond her culinary skills, Anders highlighted Fatima’s welcoming and compassionate nature. The cherished moments spent with Fatima and the valuable lessons gleaned from her life and career will endure.
One such lesson is Fatima’s determination to pursue her dreams. According to Anders, Fatima had a deep-seated desire to share the flavours of her upbringing with the world.
“Fatima started her culinary journey with the simplest things [such as] a two-plate stove and a little wooden table in the kitchen. Her dream was to show the world the foods she grew up with, and … She stuck to her guns. She wasn’t going to allow that two-plate stove to stop her from doing what she wanted to do.”
Having authored three books dedicated to Malay cooking and graced television screens alongside her sisters Gadija in their show, “Kaap, Kerrie, and Koesister,” Fatima not only realised her dream but also invited the public to join her on the journey.
Despite her widespread fame, Fatima remained true to herself, retained her humility and, in the spirit of generosity, shared the fruits of her labour with others.
“If you saw her, she was the humblest person that I’ve ever come across. She didn’t let fame or fortune [change her]. Whatever she made, she shared it with people that needed it. She never kept things to herself.”
As we venture on our culinary journeys inspired by Fatima’s recipes, let us carry more than just the flavours she masterfully crafted.
In each sizzle and simmer, remember the person whose warm, kind, and vibrant spirit infused every dish she created. Let us savour the delicious results and honour her memory by embodying the passion and generosity she brought to cooking.
