South Africa – Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, has called on all road users in the province to exercise caution and responsibility during the festive season.

The MEC highlighted the importance of reducing road accidents and fatalities as traffic volumes rise with holiday travel. She stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility, particularly given the high accident rates recorded during this peak travel period.

“As we enter the 2024 festive season, the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport wishes to remind all public transport operators, commuters and all road users to play their part by being safe, considerate, and exercising caution while on the roads. We wish to remind all who will be travelling that road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” Diale-Tlabela said.

Diale-Tlabela’s appeal aligns with the launch of the national festive season road safety initiative, themed “Every Day Without a Road Death – South Africa 2024.” This initiative places a strong emphasis on improving driver behaviour. It is guided by four key pillars: responsible driving, pedestrian safety, enforcement, and education.

Strict Consequences for Violations

Traffic law enforcement officials will be deployed across the province to address reckless and drunk driving. Diale-Tlabela warned that offenders will face strict consequences.

She also advised drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, paying particular attention to brakes, tyres, lights, and windscreen wipers. Cyclists and pedestrians were always encouraged to stay visible to enhance their safety.

“Road safety is a collective responsibility that requires all of us to play our part in appreciating that the road is a shared space and take responsibility for our actions. Think and drive to stay alive.”
