KwaZulu-Natal Braces for Severe Rainfall Ahead of Easter Weekend

Several districts in KwaZulu-Natal are preparing for significant rainfall, as the province once again faces the threat of severe weather conditions. Disaster management teams have been placed on high alert as persistent downpours threaten to cause widespread flooding, disrupt essential services, and pose serious risks to residents.

 

Current Weather Alert

This severe weather warning comes as other parts of the country prepare for varied conditions during the upcoming Easter weekend (April 18-21, 2025).

 

Previous instances of severe rainfall in KwaZulu-Natal have resulted in devastating consequences, including:
– Widespread flooding
– Disruption of essential services
– Multiple fatalities
– Property damage
– Infrastructure collapse

Easter Weekend Forecast for Other Regions

While KwaZulu-Natal faces severe weather conditions, other parts of South Africa will experience different weather patterns during the Easter weekend:

 

Gauteng
According to SAWS, Johannesburg and Pretoria will experience mostly cloudy to partly cloudy conditions:

Johannesburg:
– Friday: Cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers, temperatures between 14°C and 20°C
– Saturday: Partly cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers, temperatures between 14°C and 21°C
– Sunday: Partly cloudy with no expected rain, temperatures between 14°C and 23°C
– Monday: Partly cloudy with no rain, temperatures between 14°C and 23°C

 

Pretoria:
– Friday: Cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers, temperatures between 16°C and 22°C
– Saturday: Isolated showers with thundershowers in the morning, clearing in the afternoon, temperatures between 15°C and 23°C
– Sunday: Mostly sunny conditions with no rain, temperatures between 11°C and 25°C (AccuWeather)
– Monday: Sunny with minimal (3%) chance of rain, temperatures between 12°C and 22°C (AccuWeather)

 

Safety Recommendations

With the severe weather warning in KwaZulu-Natal, residents are strongly advised to:
– Stay indoors whenever possible
– Avoid crossing flooded roads or bridges
– Keep emergency contact numbers readily available
– Follow updates from official weather and emergency services
– Prepare emergency supplies including food, water, and medication

Meteorologist Amukelani Mkhari from SAWS noted that while parts of the country will experience milder temperatures during the Easter weekend, KwaZulu-Natal remains at significant risk from the severe rainfall warning.

Disaster management teams continue to monitor the situation closely as the severe weather warning remains in effect across the province.
