Israel Launches Heaviest Strikes This Year on Syria

Military escalation raises alarm as regional tensions flare and civilian toll increases.

by Muskaan Ayesha

Israel has launched its most intense wave of airstrikes on Syria this year, targeting multiple areas including the capital Damascus and the Hama region, as confirmed by Syrian activist Ibrahim Shaker and multiple international news sources. The strikes, which occurred between Friday night and Saturday morning, were described by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights as the most severe of 2025 so far, prompting fears of a broader conflict and a deepening humanitarian crisis.

According to France24, these overnight raids were reportedly in response to recent clashes and perceived threats near the presidential palace, which Syrian leaders labeled a “dangerous escalation.” Israel’s military later stated that its troops were “deployed in southern Syria and are prepared to prevent the entry of hostile forces into the area of Druze villages,” underscoring their claim of protecting the Druze minority amid local unrest.

Innocent civilians affected

The scale and nature of the strikes were confirmed by Al Jazeera, which quoted Israel’s military saying it had attacked “a military site in Syria, as well as anti-aircraft guns and surface-to-air missile infrastructure.” Imran Khan, reporting from Damascus, noted that Israel “does not want a heavily armed Syria on its border,” a stance that has shaped repeated assaults over the years, even under the now-ousted Assad regime.

Shaker, who has been vocal about the impact of these strikes on ordinary citizens, reiterated his warning: “There are many innocent people who are murdered because of these strikes.” He emphasized the growing urgency for diplomatic and regional unity, arguing that the new Syrian government must be supported in efforts to halt further military violations.

“There is a humanitarian crisis that is constantly being overlooked,” he added, condemning what he sees as calculated geopolitical interference. “It’s time for all countries to stop against Israel.”

The struggle to rebuild Syria

The pattern of Israeli airstrikes, particularly those aimed at areas housing former government military infrastructure, continues to destabilize the country’s efforts to rebuild. Reconnaissance aircraft have also been reported flying at low altitudes over Damascus and its surrounding countryside, signaling a prolonged Israeli surveillance campaign, according to Al Jazeera Arabic.

Shaker links the military aggression to broader imperial interests, suggesting that Israel’s support for the Druze minority may be a strategic maneuver to fracture internal Syrian unity. “The new government calls the nations to stop the Israeli strikes on Syria because there are many innocent people,” he stated, pointing to what he views as a deliberate attempt to disrupt Syria’s fragile recovery.

The possibility of retaliation remains high. As Shaker warns, continued attacks could provoke a military response from the new government, drawing in regional actors and escalating the conflict beyond Syrian borders. “Such strikes lead to many innocent people who are murdered,” he reiterated.

As Middle Eastern leaders watch the situation unfold, Shaker’s call to action is clear: unify now, before the consequences of silence lead to irreversible chaos.
