Local – The Government has condemned the deadly shootout between illegal miners and police in Riverlea, Johannesburg, which left a 59-year-old man dead.

The victim was reportedly caught in the crossfire during a gunfight between SAPS officers and three suspects near the Zamimpilo informal settlement.

His body was discovered in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Police have since launched an investigation into the incident.

In a statement, Acting Government Spokesperson Nomonde Mnukwa extended condolences to the man’s family, saying: “Government extended its heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.”

She said the tragedy highlights the growing danger that illegal mining poses to both communities and law enforcement. As such, Mnukwa urged residents not to take justice into their own hands but to support police efforts.

“Community members are called to cooperate with authorities and report criminal activities taking place in their areas. Members of the public must not take the law into their own hands but should work with law enforcement and allow due processes to unfold.”

For years, Riverlea has been heavily affected by illegal mining. Armed clashes between rival zama zamas have become all too common, often putting innocent lives at risk. Despite the challenges, the government praised the police for their efforts in pushing back against these operations.

“Government commends the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to clamp down on illegal mining operations, which continue to pose serious threats to public safety and infrastructure.”

“Together, we must uphold peace, respect for the rule of law, and protect the rights and safety of all South Africans,” Mnukwa said.
