Hanover Park – Hanover Park bears the weight of another devastating tragedy. Two young lives, Haafith Umar Majiet (25) and Haafith Tawfeeq Cunnings (23), cruelly taken in broad daylight on Wednesday. This senseless violence has shattered not only their families but also plunged the entire community of Hanover Park into deep sorrow and disbelief.
Police responded to the incident at approximately 3PM, discovering the individuals inside a vehicle, each afflicted by gunshot injuries to the head. This tragedy unfolds just weeks after the loss of Aboobakr du Preez, who was fatally shot mere steps away from Masijdur Rahmaan. Du Preez’s tragic passing galvanised the community’s religious leaders and residents, igniting a collective call for change and an end to the heartrending violence plaguing their community.
The loss of promising young lives
The loss has hit the community especially hard as Haafith Majiet and Haafith Cunnings lived their lives to serve Allah (SWT) and their community. Haafith Majiet had aspirations to become an Imam, and was known for his dedication to his studies and his community, said Mufti Sayed Haroon Al Azhari, Head of the Cape Town Ulama Board. Haafith Cunnings was equally driven and had also planned to further his education leaving his job in order to fulfil his dreams.
“He was at Darul Uloom Arabiyyah al-Islamiyyah. He wanted to become an Aalim, he was a second year student and he wanted to be an Imam and further his studies like his father. Haafith Tawfeeq left his work and everything now in August just waiting to pursue his studies and his dreams in life. They were both students and they both wanted to get something further.”
These two young men had families, wives, and children who are now left to navigate life without them. Haafith Majiet left behind two children, while his wife is expecting their third. Haafith Tawfeeq is survived by one child and his wife. Their dreams and potential were cut short by an act of violence that defies comprehension.
Various organisations like the Cape Town Ulama Board, the Muslim Judicial Council, the Cape Town Islamic Education Center, and the Madina Institute, have rallied in support of the grieving families.

Taking a lesson from this tragedy
In times of tragedy, we often search for meaning and lessons to be drawn. One lesson we can glean from this heartbreaking incident is to live our lives with intention and purpose. Let us strive to make a positive impact on the lives of others and be remembered for the good we do. Additionally, following the Sunnah of supporting grieving families and the community during times of hardship is crucial to healing and unity.
“We should take a lesson from this. Nabi (SAW) said that death is the best warner and lecturer. The first lesson we can take from this is, life is short. When we’re with people make sure that we live an intentionally fulfilled existence. Make sure we give value to people’s lives. Let them remember us for the good we do. When we do anything, do it only for the pleasure of Allah (SWT). Nabi (SAW) said, an intelligent man controls himself and carries out deeds which will benefit him after death. We can pass away at any time.”
Hanover Park community seeking justice
While the community mourns and offers its condolences, there is also a demand for justice. The perpetrators of this heinous crime remain at large, a stark reminder of the need for accountability in society. Without accountability, chaos and violence prevail. The community’s call for justice is not only a cry for the victims but also a plea for a safer and more just society. The community will once again be meeting with various community and religious leaders to again discuss what needs to be done for change to occur.
“Up till now, they don’t know who did it. Although there are certain things circulating on social media, the parents did say they cannot say for certain who did it. They are still going to look for them … Justice has to be brought because in our societies, there is freedom without boundaries and that’s what causes the chaos. There’s no accountability. If there is accountability then people won’t be doing these types of things.”
As Hanover Park mourns the untimely loss of Haafith Majiet and Haafith Cunnings, our hearts ache for the dreams shattered, the families forever changed, and the community left in profound sorrow. Their aspirations to serve and learn remind us of the precious potential that violence has stolen. In the face of this tragedy, may we find purpose in living intentionally, spreading goodness, and supporting one another, as exemplified by our faith. As we seek justice, may we remember that accountability is the bedrock of a just society, and in our collective effort to bring light to these dark moments, may we forge a path toward a safer and more compassionate tomorrow.
