KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli wants tighter control of goods coming into the province through its ports. This after the discovery of counterfeit and expired goods in Durban on Wednesday.

A raid in Bluff led police to discover counterfeit items like prescription medication and body lotion. They also found expired alcoholic beverages.

After visiting the offending warehouse, Ntuli said his province was likely the entry point for a much wider network of counterfeit and illegal goods.

He further stated that imported goods needed to be subject to tighter scrutiny upon arrival.

“It emphasised the importance of enhancing the control in our ports for imports, also our borders. Things which are not supposed to be in our country are not supposed to easily cross those points,” he told Newzroom Afrika.

“We will be talking to our national government so that we find ways of arresting these before it actually reaches our province,” he added.
