Local – Johannesburg Water has assured residents that progress is being made to improve the water supply to Coronationville, located in the west of the city.
The update comes after violent protests last month, when residents demanded a consistent water supply. Officials stated that the unrest highlighted the need to address water shortages in the area.
“Johannesburg Water is making progress on the planned intervention to improve supply to the high zone of Coronationville. The project commenced on 22 September 2025, with excavations completed on both sides of the street in the vicinity of Harmony and Hamilton streets,” the entity said.
Work has now advanced to a critical phase, with engineers focusing on welding and preparing the pipe network for connection. Officials stressed that visible progress has already been made on the ground.
“A socket has been welded onto the main pipe supplying Crosby. Road cutting and trenching have also been finalised, and pipe-laying with valve installation is currently underway,” the statement added.
Authorities confirmed that the intervention is on track, with final connections expected this week. They assured residents that relief was on the way, provided all systems were successfully commissioned.
“Commissioning of the cross-connection is expected on Friday,” Johannesburg Water said.
Commando System Challenges
While Coronationville is the immediate focus, the utility acknowledged similar supply issues in neighbouring suburbs. Engineers are exploring both short- and long-term solutions to stabilise water provision.
“Johannesburg Water has allocated a team to investigate challenges in Claremont, Westbury and Westdene. These investigations are ongoing, and solutions will differ for each block. Long-term improvements remain dependent on broader system upgrades,” the statement read.
Residents were also reminded to exercise caution as construction continues. Officials warned that safety measures remain in place to protect both workers and the public.
“The Coronationville project remains an active construction site, and residents are urged to keep clear of restricted areas. These measures are designed to safeguard the community and Johannesburg Water staff,” the entity explained.
Johannesburg Water added that further updates would be provided as work progressed, apologising for any inconvenience caused.
