Political Analyst Predicts DA’s Ad Fiasco Could Lead to Further Voter Decline

South Africa – The Democratic Alliance (DA) has consistently expressed its disapproval and criticism of the African National Congress (ANC), Economic Freedom Fighters, and uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK). However, South African citizens, politicians, and political analysts have considered their latest election advertisement overly aggressive and crossing the line.

The ad shows the South African flag burning to ashes. As such, the video and its contents have been met with significant backlash.

Many perceive this representation as highly disrespectful, undermining the national flag, which symbolises the country’s national pride, democratic ideals, and, importantly, the overcoming of Apartheid.

Despite the extensive disapproval, DA leader John Steenhuizen defends the ad, arguing that the flag in the advertisement symbolises the country’s future if citizens do not support the DA during this year’s election.

In a Salaamedia interview, Political Analyst Sandile Swana explained that burning a flag could have multiple interpretations, including as a form of protest against the government and opposing political parties. However, the DA overlooked the broader implications of such an act.

By burning the flag, they risked conveying disrespect not only towards government institutions or policies they wished to criticise but also towards the general public, who view the flag as an expression of their national identity and heritage.

Accordingly, Swana criticised the DA’s approach, suggesting that it unnecessarily drags South Africans into their conflict with the ANC, EFF, and MK.

“The DA Is provoking the nation by involving us in something that is not our doing. The criminal acts, non-conformance and corruption of the ANC must not be mistaken for the mistakes of the people of South Africa.”

He believes that the DA will likely remove the ad in the coming days due to its disgraceful nature.

“Sooner or later, they are going to withdraw that advert. Because it is insulting to the citizens.”

DA Stunts Costing Them Votes

It’s no secret that the DA has been losing public support. This decline in voter backing is attributed to their positions on the Gaza genocide and their failure to adequately address the needs and concerns of various marginalised communities in the Western Cape.

Swana noted that the DA’s popularity amongst South Africans has waned for some time. He believes their recent campaign tactic of burning the flag will not endear them to the public and will likely have negative repercussions during elections.

However, he mentioned that a sincere apology from the DA for this misstep could significantly mend their relationship with the citizens.

“The flag does not belong to the ANC. It belongs to all the citizens and residents of the country. By involving us, they need to apologise, and they will be forgiven. Unfortunately, they may have annoyed a lot of voters in the country.”
