“Take up the challenge, show up for yourself and take your life to the next level” this was the inspirational message from Na’ima B Robert in an interview with Salaamedia on Sunday evening.

The world-renowned author and founding editor of the UK-based Muslim women’s publication, SISTERS Magazine, spoke to Shafinaaz Hassim, on Salaamedia’s “Bookbytes” show about her new book titled “Show Up: A Motivational Message for Muslim Women”. The book is based on Robert’s personal story, in which she reflects on her journey through life with references from the Holy Qur’an, Hadith and contemporary thinkers. Launched 26 February, the book is now a #1 bestseller in the Spiritual Inspiration category on Amazon.

“Showing up means to be aware, mindful and present in your life as it is and to live it fully as the hero of your life story – that’s what ‘show up’ means. It does not mean anything to do with public image, social media and getting famous. Being your authentic self and honoring the life that you’ve been given with all the opportunities and the challenges is showing up.” Robert explained.

She also recalled her agent’s skepticism over the title of the book, saying that her agent thought it may be “a bit confrontational,” but Robert stuck to her vision, “it doesn’t matter, it is what it is, when I say show up I want people to understand what showing up means”

While reflecting on the loss of her husband, Robert also spoke of how people tend to respond to loss, “the very fact that it’s been taken from you is a reminder that you had it in the first place and a lot of the time we don’t really look at things that way. What I’m trying to do in the book is help people to shift their paradigm and to really change the way they look at the reality of this life and its tests because this is the superpower that we as human beings have.”
