“As if We Are One Organ”: Muslimah on Call Bringing Muslims Together This Eid

by Thaabit Kamaar

Muslimah on Call is back with their second annual Eid event, dubbed Annual Mass Eid 2023. The success of their first event inspired the group to bring the community together once more in celebration of this joyous occasion.

Muslimah on Call is a humanitarian organisation that focuses on aiding disadvantaged communities. The group comprises a team of incredible women with branches in Johannesburg and Cape Town. With their sights set high, the team hopes to branch out into other provinces.

Fatimah Khoele Mokaba, Advisory Committee member at Muslimahs on Call, said, “This is our second one and we’re hoping this one will be bigger than last year’s. The mass Eid, the whole point of it was basically to make sure that nobody is left behind. So all Muslims especially our new Muslims are not spending Eid on their own and they have company with them.”

Ramadan, the Month of Unity

During the holy month of Ramadan, the organisation generously distributes hampers filled with ample supplies for families to use throughout the month. They also run a soup kitchen catering to the community’s needs.

Ramadan is the month of humanity, encouraging acts of kindness and generosity towards others. The Mass Eid Lunch initiative aims to reinforce the Islamic teachings of unity, bringing community members closer to each other and God.

Mokaba said, “Humanity really matters in the month of Ramadan. It’s a month of Quran and it’s a month of charity as well. So that’s why it’s … A month where we go about doing as much charity as we can for the pleasure of Allah … [And] to be a Muslim anywhere in the world means feeling and developing the sense of belonging to the ummah, as if we are one organ in one huge body.”

Collaboration with Different Communities

Mokaba shared that her organisation has received overwhelming support from individuals and communities alike. The outpouring of support has been tremendous, and the group is now in the process of holding meetings with even more collaborators who want to be part of their incredible work. She is hopeful that it will create a bigger “vibe” and that people will be looking forward to joining them.

By hosting this event, Muslimah on Call is taking a massive step towards achieving their goal of bringing Muslim communities together. They hope to get the community and others involved to make it an even greater success than last year.

“We are hoping that your listeners out there are inspired by the mass Eid and hopefully more communities will come in and join us. As well as more collaborators [who] will be willing to join … We are doing this for the pleasure of Allah and for Ubuntu because [it’s a step] as South Africans coming together and becoming one.”
