Week4Palestine Calls for Global Solidarity in Week-Long Awareness Drive

by Thaabit Kamaar

South Africa – Week4Palestine SA Spokesperson, Humanitarian and Writer Zukiswa Wanner has voiced significant concerns about South African citizens supporting Israel, some even relocating there and joining the Israeli Occupation Force, fully aware of their actions in the Palestinian territories and the severe and destructive genocidal measures in Gaza.

She also highlighted the troubling fact that certain politicians and political parties have not condemned Israel for the deaths of nearly 35,000 Palestinians, a figure estimated to be a lot higher, nor for the deliberate starvation of the Palestinian people, including children, through attacks on aid convoys and the killing of aid workers.

Wanner finds it particularly alarming that these party leaders have also failed to criticise Israel for practising apartheid, especially given South Africa’s history and struggles against such an unjust system.

“I don’t understand any South African not speaking up for [Palestine]. I don’t understand political parties, who are about to go into an election, not speak very loudly against [Israel] … You have to be in a place where you really dislike the rest of the population of this country.”

For many in South Africa, the occurrence of apartheid elsewhere in the world should naturally prompt a robust and unified reaction from those who once fought against it. Instead, the issue has only deepened divisions in the country along political, religious, and racial lines regarding Israel.

There’s an expectation for South Africa, from its sons and daughters, to be a vocal critic of Israel, given our stance on human rights and our history with systemic oppression. Yet, the lack of unity and solidarity with Palestinians among our citizens, civil society, and political factions raises doubts about our commitment to human rights, potentially tarnishing our international reputation as firm advocates for freedom, justice, and equality.

Week4Palestine More Than a Show of Solidarity

Week4Palestine 2024, from May 1 to May 7, is an influential initiative focused on promoting Palestinian rights and fostering global solidarity. In South Africa, this event encompasses a week filled with various activities, such as discussions, events, and actions, aimed at increasing awareness and elevating Palestinian perspectives.

The main goals of this movement are to deepen the understanding of Palestinians’ challenges and to garner international support to advocate for their justice and freedom. It serves as a vital platform for people both in South Africa and globally to actively engage and further educate themselves about the ongoing Palestinian issues.

Wanner emphasised that #Week4Palestine not only continues to support and express solidarity with the Palestinian pursuit for independence and liberty but also serves as a statement against pro-Zionist factions within our country.

She pointed out that despite election outcomes, the commitment to speaking out for Palestine and incorporating their cause into our shared histories and foreign policies remains steadfast.

“Week4Palestine is really fighting to ensure that we keep Palestine in our minds [always].”
