The Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) have called on the government to give a written undertaking that spaza shops owned by foreign nationals would not be targeted during the 21-day nationwide lockdown.

The owners of several spaza shops have reported that they’ve either been prevented from opening their stores or harassed by members of SAPS and SANDF.

Salaamedia’s Azhar Vadi on Friday spoke to a community spokesperson, Amir Sheikh, on The Alternative View.

“Many spaza shops have been closed due to miscommunication, harassment, intimidation and out of fear of racial profiling by the same law enforcement officers that are meant to protect them,” said Sheikh.

In the build-up to the 21-day nationwide lockdown, it had been widely reported that only spaza shops that are owned and managed by locals would be allowed to remain open during the lockdown period.
