Government needs to provide clarity on the future of e-tolls, says OUTA

JOHANNESBURG – Civil rights group Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) has criticised Government for not being clear on the fate of E-tolls, after Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula indicated that there is no intention to scrap the controversial system in the immediate future.

Speaking to Salaamedia, Chief Executive Officer at OUTA Wayne Duvenage said that the lack of transparency and information on the way forward for E-tolls in Gauteng has left people in confusion.

“This is the problem with our government; that they they do not provide the information. [With] the lack of transparency, they leave us confused,” he said.

Duvenage added that promises of a decision on the future of the controversial system on Gauteng highways are yet to materialise.

He said: “Over a number of years, [we’ve been told] that the decision is imminent – that there are alternatives – yet we hear nothing. I don’t have to remind you how many times they said this was [the] last year and by March we’ll have an answer so they’re very confusing”.

The E-tolling system was implemented on the Gauteng highway network on 3 December 2013. Following a furore amongst motorists, officials from the National Government and Gauteng Provincial Government have issued conflicting statements on the matter.

OUTA has described the system as “a failed scheme”.
