Security expert urges Lenasia residents to actively report crime amidst increasing criminality

JOHANNESBURG – Residents should report incidents of crime to the Police – even as ‘stupid’ as it may seem – in an effort to curb the spate of crime currently affecting Lenasia, according to a security expert.

Speaking to Salaamedia, the owner of local security company Lethal Forces Security, Shahim Ismail, explained that reporting incidents of crime could be an effective tool to combat rising crime that has plagued the area for years. He urged residents not to deem any incident as too petty to be reported.

“According to our Constitution, it is our right to be protected. Once we go that route and any incident gets reported – no matter what it is – it might look as stupid as what it is [you should] report it because today it might be a tekkie that is stolen from your line [but] tomorrow they could come into your house and take away your safe,” he said.

At the same time, Ismail blamed an under-resourced Police force for the Lenasia’s ongoing crime woes. He highlighted the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) lack of fleet as one of the challenges presented by the lack of resources.

“We got four sectors Lenesia and we only got two vehicles. There’s four sectors that must run two vehicles under four
sectors,” he said, as he explained the effect of the Police force being under-resourced to tackle the crime.
