Lyrical Pilgrimage open mic provides a platform for expression in Cape Town

Open mic events are usually held in clubs and bars, with alcohol flowing and the ambiance being anything but sacred. However, Nina Alexia Brazzo, realised there was a need for a different kind of open mic event – one for people who were on a spiritual journey.

Brazzo noticed that some people needed a more comfortable and sacred space to share their thoughts and feelings. And so, Lyrical Pilgrimage was born and has grown since 2016.

Lyrical Pilgrimage is an open mic event that takes place monthly, at different venues in Cape Town. The next event, themed Revealing Sacred Journeys Through Creative Expression, will bring amateur and professional artists on Friday, 3 March 2023 at Ground Culture in Cape Town.

“What makes this special is that people from all different faiths, different backgrounds come together. It meets our vision to bridge a gap between segregated communities,” said Brazzo.

The open mic will feature Somali poet Afeefa Omar and Congolese visual artist Ces’arts Kinsumba. It is open to everyone, whether you are an artist or someone who wants to watch and appreciate what’s on offer. One of the main ideas behind the event is that anything goes.

“There’s many people looking for a space like this … Anyone who’s a spiritual or a truth seeker and just kindred spirits that like to come together and for authentic sharing,” added Brazzo.

Lyrical Pilgrimage is a refreshing take on the usual open mic event, offering a space where people can come together and share their thoughts and feelings without fear. The open mic is priced at R70 at the door, and R60 if you buy tickets in advance. It starts at 6 pm for 7 pm and will be accessible to everyone.

The organiser may be contacted on 082 071 9414.
