The Light of Justice: Reflecting on the enduring legacy of Imam Achmad Cassiem

by Luqmaan Rawat

South Africa – Imam Achmad Cassiem was an extraordinary individual whose life and legacy have left an indelible imprint on the tapestry of justice. He was a prominent figure in the struggle for justice during Apartheid, a founder member of the Resistance Movement Qibla and was the youngest Robben Island prisoner. He dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice and the betterment of society. His passing is a great loss, but his impact and teachings continue to inspire generations.

From the tender age of 15, he actively participated in the anti-Apartheid movement and fought against oppressive systems. Two years later, at the age of 17, he was arrested and spent 11 years in prison with a further 11 years under banning orders. Despite facing multiple charges and serving time in prison, his resolve never wavered. He stood up against injustice, facing banning orders, and even the Terrorism Act and this will always be his legacy, explained Imraahn Mukaddam, Community Activist and CEO of Inspire Media Networks.

“His every waking moment was in the pursuit of justice throughout. In educating, in actively participating and in setting the example and leading by example and instituting organisations that can further the hands of justice. Imam Achmad Cassiem leaves us with a legacy that is built around the concept of a just society.”

A passion for education and social justice

Imam Cassiem was not only a religious leader but also a teacher. He believed in the power of education and used it as a tool for change. Despite severe restrictions, he continued to educate and inspire young people.

“In the 80’s when he was under severe banning orders that only one person could be in his company, he would have his lectures on the bus to and from his office. He would actually conduct a series of lectures with the young people. The passion that he had despite the severe restrictions that were placed on him, he continued to be actively involved in the struggle at grassroots levels.”

The Qibla Movement and its impact

Imam Cassiem played a pivotal role as a founding member of the Qibla Movement. Although considered a radical organisation by the Apartheid government, the Qibla Movement inspired many individuals. It sought to bring about change through education, revolutionary thinking and social justice, which was Imam Cassiem’s way, explained  Fatiema Haron Masoet, daughter of anti-Apartheid activist Marhoom Imam Abdullah Haron.

“He not only stood up against the Apartheid system, but he stood up and spoke out against any injustice system. Particularly the Israeli system with what they are doing to the Palestinian people. He was fearless. The Quraan was his system, his guide so he was not afraid. He was a man who stood firm… he believed that before there could be peace, there must be justice.”

Imam Cassiem’s legacy will be remembered for his revolutionary teachings and unwavering pursuit of justice. His principles and actions continue to inspire people to challenge oppressive systems and work towards a better society. His profound impact on individuals and communities is evident in the memories shared by those who had the honour of knowing him.
