South Africa – Aneeqa Du Plessis, a Journalist at the Voice of the Cape, asserts the active ownership of media spaces by Muslim women holds great significance. Though at times it may be difficult, she believes, it is a means through which they can uphold a positive image of Islam, countering the adverse portrayal often perpetuated by specific media platforms.

“Here, we are able to show the world that this is what Islam is about, peace, love and unity. We have a space like this, and we, as Muslim women, also have voices. We can raise our voices when it matters most regarding the multitude of issues we see not only in South Africa but all around the world.”

In light of this, Du Plessis expresses her gratitude towards the Muslim women who have led the way for others like herself. These trailblazers have set noteworthy precedents and continue to empower future journalists by instilling them with the assurance to establish their presence in these spaces.

The Importance of Women Sharing Their Stories

From a tender age, Du Plessis harboured a natural inclination to immerse herself in media. She staunchly advocates for women to take charge of narrating their own stories rather than letting others assume that role.

Du Plessis conveyed her deep gratitude for the privilege of bringing the narratives of marginalised individuals, not merely within the confines of the Western Cape but across South Africa. She also cherishes the media’s role in enabling her to actively engage with and support the diverse communities of the Western Cape daily.

“I find it amazing to be able to help our community on a daily basis. Because Voice of the Cape is a community station, so going out across the cape flats and being able to tell the stories of our brothers and sisters is an incredible [blessing from God].”

Du Plessis’s Advice to Women

Du Plessis called on her fellow women in the media, encouraging them to stand as beacons of light and wellsprings of inspiration for women across the nation.

She urges them not to retreat from sharing their stories, even when the content may be disconcerting. Furthermore, she imparts the wisdom of resilience, advising women to uphold their strength within their domestic and professional spheres.

“Keep doing the amazing work that you are doing. Keep telling our stories and owning your space. Be bold about it, do not hide or feel shameful or guilty about telling your stories. For women across the globe, keep being resilient. For the single mom that has to wake up every morning to ensure that her kids get something to eat, may [God] make it easy for you,”
