Eastern Cape – South Africa is rich in history and culture, which extends beyond the confines of Apartheid. Nonetheless, significant portions of its distinct cultural tapestry, characterised by a fusion of African, European, and Asian influences, frequently remain in the shadows of obscurity.

For this reason, Gishma Johnson, one of the Co-founders of iFM, emphasises the importance of active engagement from every cultural faction nationwide. Johnson asserts that each of South Africa’s diverse cultural groups must take part in telling their stories.

“We’ve got a rich history in the Eastern Cape and our stories are not told, especially the stories of our Muslims … For example, one of the oldest Masjids for example sits right here and it’s the oldest in South Africa. Arguably there is debate around it but the oldest in terms of having been built from the ground in 1845 … But these are stories that are not told.”

iFM, Encouraging Community Participation

iFM operates as a radio station deeply rooted in the Muslim community in the Eastern Cape. Its core principles extend beyond spreading the message of Islam to its diverse audience. Apart from its Islamic programming, the station also aims to inform, invite, and inspire its listeners through its engaging content.

Presently, iFM functions voluntarily. Consequently, Johnson encourages individuals aspiring to enter the media industry to consider volunteering at the station. This volunteering opportunity offers a unique pathway to acquire profound insights into the workings of the industry.

“I feel that more people should come forward, especially among the youth. We often find that older persons actually put up their hands to come and volunteer. Yet, it’s such a great opportunity for young professionals … We are calling for more and more people to come on board … You can become a media professional just by being there.”

She firmly believes that a wealth of knowledge can be gleaned, especially for young enthusiasts, from the station’s seasoned personnel and dedicated volunteers. Johnson herself is committed to sharing her expertise nurturing a new generation of writers, journalists, presenters, and producers capable of crafting authentic and engaging stories.
