Bridget Munnik: A Beacon of Hope in Westbury’s Community

by Thaabit Kamaar

Johannesburg – As media members, we frequently bring attention to the hardships and difficulties experienced by underprivileged communities. However, it is essential to remember that within these communities are individuals with unique stories, aspirations, and dreams that extend beyond their adversities.

Therefore, we, as the media, must move away from sensationalism and mere statistics and instead recognize the inherent humanity at the core of these issues. Often, the older generation’s wisdom, hope, and compassion serve as a reminder of this responsibility. Individuals like Bridget Munnik (64) exemplify this commitment.

For years, Aunty Bree, as she is affectionately known, has been dedicating her time to volunteer work, tirelessly striving to improve the lives of people in the area, whether it is through social initiatives such as providing meals, supporting individuals dealing with addiction and gender-based violence, or assisting children and young adults in developing skills and participating in educational programs.

“I love my community. I just want to go back to Ubuntu, where we say Westbury is a place of dreams.”

I Am a Survivor

Throughout her lifetime, Aunty Bree has faced numerous hardships. She grew up as an orphan, bore witness to and endured the challenges of an abusive marriage, and experienced firsthand the devastating impact of drug addiction within her family.

However, in the face of all these adversities, Aunty Bree never allowed herself to be defeated by them. On the contrary, these challenges drove her determination to overcome them and channel all her pain, knowledge, and wisdom into serving the Westbury community.

“I’m a Survivor, and I didn’t do it alone. God held my hand all the time so that I can shine and be a shining light for the community and the world.”

Westbury, Never Lose Hope!

Westbury, a well-known suburb in Johannesburg, has long been associated with poverty, gang activity, and drug-related issues. While this holds true, much like many other underprivileged neighbourhoods in the city, it does not fully represent the spirit of the community.

According to Aunty Bree, the residents of this community have been striving to rise from their challenging circumstances and break free from the burdens that have held them down.

“Through all the storms in Westbury, there’s always good things. Every dark cloud has a silver line, and that’s why we’re here.”

Despite moments of despair and the feeling that their efforts may go unnoticed, Aunty Bree encourages the community never to lose hope, especially when facing their most challenging times, as it is often in the darkest moments that the dawn of change begins.
