Afghanistan – Recently, the pressing situation in Afghanistan has been overshadowed by Israel’s ongoing bombardment of Gaza. Amid Israel’s genocide, Afghanistan remains dedicated to its recovery efforts following a series of earthquakes which devastated the Herat province early last month.

These seismic events destroyed homes and villages, as well as claimed thousands of lives, further exacerbating the country’s growing humanitarian crisis. To compound the challenges, the Afghan government faces an uphill battle as it endeavours to provide for the hundreds of thousands of its citizens who were expelled from neighbouring Pakistan.

The Plight of the People of Afghanistan

In a conversation with Salaamedia, Hafiz Hassan Choonara from the African Muslim Agency (AMA) depicted a grim predicament faced by the earthquake survivors. A significant number of survivors, including children, find themselves in a state of hopelessness as vital resources steadily diminish.

Food shortage has become a pressing concern, and survivors must boil sewage water for consumption. Moreover, with winter drawing near, these individuals are urgently seeking proper shelter to protect themselves from the cold.

“There are children who are growing hungry. There are children who have not eaten for days. There are mothers who are sacrificing their meals for their children. There are mothers who, with the little leftovers they get from neighbours, have to choose between perhaps six kids, three of the six kids they can feed from the leftovers. That’s the reality of the situation in Afghanistan. With regards to the water situation, the elderly are drawing the surface water of sewage and using it for consumption. How is it right in today’s day and age in the 21st century?”

A Little More Hope Is Required

The AMA has remained a consistent presence in Afghanistan, extending support to its people in any way possible. They have undertaken numerous projects and campaigns, supported by generous donors, to foster a sustainable future for the Afghan population.

However, despite the extensive efforts, donations, and sponsorships, much work still needs to be accomplished.

While standing alongside several Afghan children and cradling two of them in his arms, Choonara emphasised their mission goes beyond merely delivering resources and humanitarian aid. It is about reinstating the Afghan people’s dignity and allowing children the chance to embrace their authentic selves and play and engage in activities typical for their age.

“It’s not just about the food parcel. It goes beyond it. It’s about bringing dignity to the homes. It’s bringing smiles and allowing these children to be kids. To dream, to have a vision, a drive, and aspirations.”
