In the build-up to the nationwide lockdown, many services have come to a halt and institutions have closed their doors, including mosques and other religious sites.

The Phoenix Religious Leader’s Forum has since decided to close places of worship in line with government measures introduced to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Salaamedia’s Inayet Wadee spoke to Maulana Tariq Muhammed, who said that it was an “emotional” decision to take.

“There were many deliberations. In these times, people [believe] that one of the saviours could be prayer and linking to our religious centres. However, the reason we came to this decision was because of safety and health precautions.”

He added: “If we continued with congregations, it would become very difficult for us to stop the spread.”
