South Africans trapped in Peru as countries go on lockdown

A group of travellers who had intended on touring parts of South America has had to cut their trip short in order to get back to South Africa.

This comes as countries across the world go under lockdown due to the aggressive spread of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.

Salaamedia’s Inayet Wadee spoke to one of the tour group members, Tahera Gani, to find out how she made her journey home to escape the lockdown in Peru.

“At first, we didn’t realize the situation we were in. Unfortunately, language is a barrier in places like these as not many people speak English and the [news] was in Spanish and Portuguese so we couldn’t quite make out what was happening,” said Gani.

“Finally we were sent messages to confirm that Peru will be on shutdown. So that gave us anxiety and we decided to go to the airport earlier to see what we can do.”

However, it wasn’t a matter of quick rerouting at the airport as the group had initially expected it to be. Gani recalls chaos and panic at the airport.

She then had to continue her journey solo. But that was not as easy and straightforward as it would appear.
