Calls for Muslim unity in Palestinian resistance

by Zahid Jadwat

An activist has called on the Muslim world to unite behind the Palestinian resistance movement. This comes after Israeli police stormed Masjid Al Aqsa and attacked worshippers in a violent escalation last week.

Speaking at a solidarity iftar at Masjidul Umma in Soweto, south of Johannesburg, activist Ismail Moolla urged Muslims in the diaspora to take a stance against the oppressive regime.

“It is important for us as Muslims to make sure that the plight of the Palestinians is always on our mind. We have to be active. We can’t be passive in calling for the liberation of our lands. We have to be active in calling our government to cut Israel out. Cut all dealings with Israel,” he told a gathering shortly before iftar on Friday.

Take a stance

Moolla reflected on the resistance against South Africa’s apartheid regime, when external pressure through boycotts isolated Pretoria. He also called on the public to continue raising awareness about the plight of Palestinians.

“It is important for us to organise events, to educate people, to let people know and to make sure that the Palestinians are also aware that we haven’t forgotten them. They are not alone.”

He further stated the time had come for leaders of Muslim countries in the Arab world to take firm action and stand on the side of Palestinian resistance. He said it was not enough for them to merely condemn incursions at Masjid Al Aqsa from time to time.

“There are violations taking place and the sad part is people are only talking. All these Arabs [say] go back to the status quo. After two days, the Zionists are back there. Then, there’ll be another statement and they’ll say the Organisation of Islamic Countries will have an emergency meeting. We think, ‘Hey, it’s an emergency meeting. Big things are happening’. One statement will come out from there, that’s all.”

Moolla said their failure to take any drastic action against Israel’s illegal occupation and violent attacks directed at Palestinians was a weakness in the Muslim world. This allowed Israel’s atrocities to continue unchecked, he said.
