Shafinaaz Hassim: An Inspiration to Aspiring Storytellers

South Africa – Any award which acknowledges a writer represents a celebration of their literary excellence and a recognition of the impact their words have on society. These honours given to writers, authors, poets, and journalists stand as a testament to the enduring influence of storytelling.

Consequently, they serve as a source of inspiration, pushing these artists to surpass the boundaries of their creativity and shed light on the collective thoughts, ideas, and experiences of people, all while challenging conventional, traditional, and social norms.

The body of work by a particular writer accomplishes just that, making it unsurprising that Shafinaaz Hassim has been named the Minara Chamber of Commerce Professional Achiever of the Year.

Hassim, an already renowned, award-winning author and sociologist, expressed her profound privilege and honour in receiving this award. Additionally, she modestly and humbly recognised the high regard and prestige of her fellow finalists, emphasising how the award will serve as a source of motivation for years to come.

“The acknowledgement is very welcomed and motivating for the road ahead. It makes us realise the responsibility of pushing forward … and keep doing what we’re doing.”

An Inspiration to Other Storytellers

Hassim has authored more than a dozen novels, many of which delve into the lives of South African women within the framework of religion, tradition, and culture. Despite having written 14 books, she remains highly motivated to continue her literary work.

All of her stories possess profound meaning and a strong sense of relatability. Consequently, they have brought a transformative shift in society, particularly among conservative, culturally rooted South African women.

Hassim’s novels have effectively challenged prevailing societal and cultural standards by sharing collective experiences which encourage self-reflection and foster dialogue among women, all the while addressing the persistent challenges they face.

“We are far more open to speak about our experiences and to find active and proactive solutions. Now, when I write, I know I can push boundaries because we are ready for it … We want to sit down and empower each other.”

The Legacy of a Storyteller

While certain women may still be hesitant to open up, Hassim noted a clear trend in women increasingly willing to share their stories across various media channels, including print, digital, video, and audio.

This trend holds significance as it offers the chance for future generations to glean valuable lessons from these women’s lives and experiences. She firmly believes that a person’s life story represents the most valuable legacy which can be handed down to their families.

“If you have a story in you, as I believe everyone does … write your story. Because it’s going to resonate with somebody.”
