Activists, politicians, diplomats and others gathered in Johannesburg resolved to intensify the campaign for a liberated Palestine. Among others, delegates at the 5th Global Convention of Solidarity with Palestine also resolved to pressure international bodies to take action against the terrorist regime in apartheid Israel.

The first of 11 resolutions emphatically called for the “immediate” and “unconditional” end to the war against the people of Palestine. Announcing the resolutions on Monday, Zwelivelile “Mandla” Mandela, MP, delivered the responsibility directly on the doorstep of the United States and “supporting countries of the usurping entity”.

The convention also urged activists to denounce apartheid Israel’s terror by demonstrating the “highest level of global rejection and condemnation”. Furthermore, it resolved to develop a programme of solidarity that would comprise year-round activities advocating for the just cause.

Ethnic cleansing

There has been growing consensus that the carpet bombing of Gaza (with American bombs) – which has killed nearly 20 000 people – amounts to ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people. Speakers at the convention shared this sentiment.

Yusuf Hassan Abdi, a Kenyan politician, diplomat, social activist and former journalist, described terrorist PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s latest round of bombardment as an assault on “their lives, their humanity and their dignity “.

“Israel is carrying out ethnic cleansing and genocide and blatantly violating international law, humanitarian law and civilised society. It is hard to comprehend the pure evil on display in Gaza,” he declared.

The three-day conference took place in Johannesburg and featured a joint session of delegates from several countries. Those in attendance included a delegation of senior Hamas representatives.

Under the theme “Nelson Mandela and Palestine: Confronting Racism till Liberation”, it was meant to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the death of former president Nelson Mandela.

“Our people love life and they will live as any human in this world. They will live victorious, because on 7th of October we have won. The Flood of Al-Aqsa will end with victory,” said Dr Khaled Qaddoumi, Hamas representative based in Tehran, Iran.
