Johannesburg – At some point, many of us have likely noticed a trend where individuals from mixed backgrounds, nationalities, and faiths are improving their understanding of Islam by reading the Quran on social media.

These users often express their emotional reactions to specific verses and share their reflections in posts. Frequently, they proclaim that Islam and the Quran defy the negative portrayals perpetuated by Western narratives, observers, and media.

Amidst ongoing events, such as Israel’s bombardment and devastation of the Gaza Strip, this trend has significantly advanced to educate the public about the occupation and ethnic cleansing in Palestine. Simultaneously, it promotes a sense of empathy towards the Palestinian people.

Despite attempts by Western governments, media, and Zionist leaders to conceal Israel’s war crimes, the killing of innocent civilians in Palestinian territories, and the displacement of nearly two million people in Gaza, this trend plays a crucial role in challenging their narratives and ensuring that the truth remains exposed.

Quran Kits Distributed at Palestinian Rallies

Islam has been present in South Africa for centuries. Yet, due to various factors, including Apartheid, there exists a lack of understanding about the religion and its followers. However, there is a growing openness among people to engage in conversations about these matters.

The motivation for this newfound interest in Islam, unfortunately, stems from tragic events, such as the genocide in Gaza. Despite the sombre circumstances, Muslims are increasingly willing to interact with others and provide education about Islam, its principles, and its teachings.

These conversations occur in various settings, including workplaces, schools, on the streets, and notably during the numerous Palestinian marches that diverse groups attend.

Recognising these marches as valuable opportunities to connect with others, spread awareness about Islam, and contribute to supporting the people of Palestine, Fatima Saley, the owner of Faraza Gifts, has raised funds for Quran Kits.

These kits are distributed to individuals of all faiths and backgrounds to foster understanding and unity among the various communities.

“We collected funds for 60 kits. Those 60 kits we gave out on Sunday [at the march]. It was given out to non-Muslim people who were so ready to receive them. They were like, “Thank you so much”, “can I please have another one for my work colleague who I think is going to benefit from it?”. So that just motivated me.”

Saley’s thoughtful initiative garnered attention from Palestinian solidarity organisations in various provinces, leading them to request the creation and distribution of similar Quran Kits at their respective marches and rallies.

Similar to many individuals who have been monitoring the devastation in Gaza and experiencing heartbreak due to the inhumane actions of the Israeli regime against the Palestinians, Saley also found herself overwhelmed with grief and a deep desire to contribute in any way possible.

With tears in her eyes, she shared that she had prayed for guidance when she felt a sense of helplessness in the face of the atrocities committed against men, women, and children. During this emotional moment, she found inspiration for the Quran Kits.

“I think a lot of people can bear testimony to the fact that when you viewed what was happening and the atrocities that have been carried out, you felt helpless. [Like Oh God] I’m sitting here, what can I do to assist the Palestinians?.”

Admittedly, the Quran Kits were not a novel concept, as she distributed them consistently throughout the year. Nevertheless, with the assistance of God, family, and friends, she successfully gathered funds to distribute nearly 200 Quran Kits, with plans to send out many more in the future.
